Italy Traffic Fine Check

Italian speeding ticket from a rental car

Speed camera tickets follow the same path as ZTL fines: the rental company names the renter and the ticket arrives months later. The amount depends on how far over the limit you were, and so does what is worth checking.

Three bands, three situations

Up to 10 km/h over the limit: €42 to €173. Between 10 and 40 km/h over: €173 to €694. More than 40 km/h over: €543 to €2,170 and a licence measure, with no 30% reduction. A tolerance of 5%, at least 5 km/h, is deducted from the measured speed before the band is set.

Approved or homologated

For offences before 12 July 2026, the Court of Cassation held in 2024 and again in 2026 that approval of a device is not homologation and that a reading by a device that was only approved is not valid proof. Another 2026 order took a different line, so the case law is no longer uniform. A decree in force since 12 July 2026 homologated 25 models for the future and did not change earlier tickets. The point can be raised; the outcome is uncertain.

Calibration

Speed cameras must be calibrated every year. If the ticket does not state a calibration date within the 12 months before the offence, you can ask for the certificate through access to the file and raise the point. The outcome depends on what the certificate shows.

When the reduced amount is the lower figure

With up to 10 km/h over the limit and no objective ground, the amount reduced by 30% within 5 days is usually lower than the cost of a rejected appeal, which is at least twice the minimum. Compare the two figures before deciding.

More than 40 km/h over the limit

This band carries a licence measure and has no reduced amount. It is beyond objective checks on dates: a lawyer in Italy should look at the ticket.

Frequent questions

The ticket came with no photo. Is that a ground?

No. The law does not require the photo to be attached. The ticket must name the device, and you can ask the city for the photo through access to the file.

Are the deadlines the same as for a ZTL fine?

Yes. From the notification date: 5 days for the 30% reduction, where it applies, and 60 days for an appeal to the Prefect or the Justice of the Peace.

Does the 360-day rule apply to speeding tickets too?

Yes. For residents abroad the ticket must be sent within 360 days, counted for rental cars from the day the company passed on your details. It has to be raised with an appeal within 60 days.
